At Renmatix, our goal is simple – usher in a bioindustrial era where non-food plants, not petroleum, are refined as the basis for the chemicals, fuels and products that we use every day. We pursue that objective with an eye towards the sustainable use of energy, water, and renewable biomass feedstocks.

The Plantrose® process facilitates sustainability as a model of green chemistry and green engineering to perform biomass conversion. The technology was designed to: recycle water inputs multiple times, efficiently reuse large portions of energy that enter the system, work with renewable feedstocks that are monitored and managed, and utilize lignin solids, a co-product of the process, to minimize total carbon footprint.

Economics are key to our Plantrose advantage. The underlying technology relies on supercritical water, which at first glance may imply a high energy bill. In fact, the very high temperatures and pressures associated with the primary reactor allow that heat to be reused in the biorefinery as steam at lower temperature and pressure in a cascade. Through the careful application of heat integration, the incoming energy is re-used multiple times within the Renmatix process and much of the 'waste' heat from the process is still of a high enough quality that it may be of interest for an up- or down-stream partner (e.g. for drying or evaporation). In addition to this, the process is designed to utilize residual lignin solids and unprocessed biomass to create thermal energy, providing a carbon-neutral source for the majority of the process’s thermal demands. A focus on process intensification and green chemistry and engineering principles gives the process a small footprint and best-in-class energy economy.
