At Renmatix, our goal is simple – usher in a bioindustrial era where non-food plants, not petroleum, are refined as the basis for the products, chemicals, and fuels that we use every day. We pursue that objective with an eye towards the sustainable use of energy, water, and renewable biomass feedstocks.

The Plantrose® Process facilitates sustainability as a model of green chemistry and green engineering to perform biomass conversion. The technology was designed to: recycle water inputs multiple times, efficiently reuse large portions of energy that enter the system, work with renewable feedstocks that are monitored & managed, and utilize lignin solids, a co-product of the process, to minimize total carbon footprint.

Process Feedstocks

Plantrose feedstocks are the biomass materials used to derive Plantro Sugars and Omno Polymers. Examples of biomass feedstocks include agricultural residues such as corn stover and cane bagasse, energy grasses, and woody plants. Nonfood biomass resources allow for development of economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable biorefineries for the production of renewable materials including biochemicals, advanced biofuels, and other bioproducts. Efforts in this area will ultimately support the development of a large and varied global cellulosic biomass feedstock supply, at a reasonable cost, for use by the developing bioindustry. Renmatix is selective in working only with partners who share our commitment to the highest environmental standards and tenets of sustainable procurement.

The economic dimension of sustainability is often overlooked in discussions of harvested biomass and bioenergy. Economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability are highly interconnected and bio-value chains must generate profits for upstream suppliers in order to support the availability of that feedstock supplies for these growing biomass markets. At the same time, feedstocks must be evaluated in the context of the defined procurement zones that give rise to renewable annual volumes for collection and processing of material in an affordable manner, to ensure perennial supply. While an inherent tension in the bioindustry calls for the collection of large volumes of plant material in order to create new supplies of chemical building blocks, that selective harvest of the biomass must be balanced. This careful management will ensure natural resource stands are not diminished beyond the rate at which they naturally regenerate.

Standards Rooted in the Sustainable Forestry Model

Renmatix’s partnerships with leading foresters and key pulp and paper players allow us to encourage and support sustainable forestry practices that meet the strictest international standards aimed at safeguarding vital ecosystems. We apply these same sustainability standards to all biomass feedstocks that are evaluated for conversion via the Plantrose platform.

Responsible forestry requires balancing the uses of forests for wood production against the ecosystem services they provide, including habitat for fish and wildlife and sites of cultural, historical and scenic importance. The goal of sustainable forestry practices is to manage resources to ensure that inventories are only ever consumed at a rate which can be naturally replenished, so as to maintain optimal forest inventories. Techniques include long term harvest planning, selective intervention to encourage forest regeneration, continually monitoring the health of the forest, and working with local communities to ensure the preservation of cultural heritage related to the forest. Overall, sustainable forestry emphasizes the need to keep viable all the options and opportunities for a healthy and productive future.
